Sundays don’t just happen

When you’re sat there on a Sunday morning, singing songs, saying the prayers on the screen, drinking your coffee and munching your biscuits have you ever wondered how does all this happen?
Well it takes a vast number of people to keep a church running smoothly. When I began to do a count of how many people were involved I lost count. So let’s have a look at some of the jobs that go into making church:

  • Our church wardens whose job it is to make sure the churches finances are correctly dealt with, make sure we have preachers for all the services, and have church ready for Sunday worship plus much more.
  • Then we have the Parochial church council (PCC) making decisions on our behalf.
  • Steering group helping us through the vacancy dealing with day to day needs.
  • Brochure group preparing a brochure and parish profile for prospective candidates looking at the post of vicar.
  • Office staff, counting money, dealing with inquiries and lots more.
  • Those who prepare services, write talks, choose songs, uploading worship onto the laptop.
  • Someone has to buy the milk and get the bread for communion.
  • The biscuits have to be bought, as do the cleaning materials for the cleaner.
  • Teachers for YB’s and superstars.
  • Looking after the sound desk and live streaming.
  • Servers for communion.
  • Leaders of mid-week groups
  • Café Church leaders

I’m sure I have missed some things but you get the idea, there are lots of jobs and lots of people involved, some doing more than one or two, but multiple jobs. To those people I would like to extend my grateful thanks.
In Luke 10 we read how Jesus sent out 72 disciples to preach, teach and heal. Then we have the story of the feeding of the 5000, a little boy comes forward and offers Jesus his lunch, he gives him all he has. Jesus got his disciples to prepare baskets of food to serve people.
I could go on, but my question is, are you prepared to give Jesus all that you have? You may not be a preacher or a sound desk operator but I am sure that there is something you can offer to serve Christ in our church.
I know that over these next few months there will be times when many of those already serving will be exhausted. Will you come forward and ask what you can do to help?
